This work presents cryptocurrencies, focusing on Bitcoin currency, analyzing its main characteristics, historical evolution, the diagnosis of the number of currency users, its financial turnover, the evolution of market value in recent years and the current stage of regulation in Brazil. The blockchain system was also discussed, as is the process of mining cryptocurrencies, how wallets, storage, keys work, hypotheses were developed and analyzed, confirming that Bitcoin is finite, is considered a means of payment, demands a high energy consumption for the generation and validation of operations, it is a decentralized currency, is not controlled by the government and has risks of illegal use.
